Updated: August 15, 2025 18:27

On August 15, 2025, the tenth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting was held in Anning, Yunnan. Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi shared his outlook on the prospects of LMC when jointly meeting the press with Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa.

Wang Yi stated that the next decade of LMC holds promising prospects. Standing at a new starting point, the six countries will strive to build an "LMC 2.0" characterized by unity and cooperation, openness and win-win outcomes, green innovation, and peace and tranquility, jointly opening a new golden decade of LMC and accelerating the building of a Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future of peace and prosperity.

First, improve the development of the LMC mechanism. The six countries will strengthen high-level strategic communication, prepare for the leaders' meeting, make good use of cooperation mechanisms across various fields, and promote the establishment of the LMC International Secretariat.

Second, accelerate the process of economic integration. The six countries will focus on the development of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Economic Development Belt, build regional transportation, industrial, and energy networks, facilitate high-level flows of people, capital, goods, and technology, conduct policy communication, standard alignment, and capacity training, and provide support for stable regional industrial and supply chains and sustainable growth.

Third, explore regional coordinated governance. The six countries will carry out joint research, information sharing, and coordinated action focusing on prominent issues such as agriculture, water resources, environmental protection, and combating cross-border crimes. The six countries will promote the establishment of a cooperation platform for the safety protection of overseas citizens, expedite the establishment of a legal and judicial exchange and cooperation mechanism among Lancang-Mekong countries, and make the Lancang-Mekong Integrated Law Enforcement and Security Cooperation Center more substantive and stronger.

Fourth, foster a sense of the Lancang-Mekong family. The six countries will encourage people-to-people and cultural exchanges, deepen cooperation in culture, tourism, education, media, and think tanks, launch more "small yet beautiful" projects, and enhance the sense of gain among the people of the six countries.

Wang Yi said that with the next decade underway, the original aspiration remains steadfast. The Lancang-Mekong countries will continue to accelerate the building of a Lancang-Mekong community with a shared future with an inclusive mindset, open attitude, and spirit of solidarity, and safeguard and develop the common home.
