On October 9, 2025 local time, Italian President Sergio Mattarella met with Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Rome.

Sergio Mattarella asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping, and extended congratulations on the positive outcomes achieved at the 12th Joint Meeting of the Italy-China Government Committee. He said that both Italy and China are ancient civilizations that champion the values of peace and cooperation, and both are committed to resolving differences through dialogue. In today's complex and turbulent world, confrontation produces no winners, and dialogue is the only way out. Noting that China enjoys high prestige in the international community and plays an increasingly crucial and important role, he said Italy looks forward to China's greater contributions to world peace and stability.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings, saying that President Sergio Mattarella is a good friend of China who has paid two state visits to China during his tenure, demonstrating his positive intention to develop China-Italy relations and his friendly sentiments toward the Chinese people. Wang Yi said China also values Italy's influence in Europe and the world at large, and stands ready to work with Italy to implement the common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries, accelerate the advancement of the action plan on strengthening the China-Italy comprehensive strategic partnership, and ensure more stable, resilient and fruitful bilateral relations. This will not only help boost the development and revitalization of both countries and improve the well-being of their peoples, but also fulfill their due responsibilities for world peace.

Wang Yi said that the world today is fraught with chaos and distrust, calling for more dialogue and communication to enhance mutual understanding and deepen cooperation. As President Sergio Mattarella has noted, more modern-day "Marco Polos" are needed to serve as bridges and links between different civilizations. As ancient civilizations, both China and Italy possess time-honored cultural heritage and profound historical resilience, enabling the two countries to view their differences with inclusiveness, address present-day challenges with wisdom, and shape the future of humanity with vision. President Xi Jinping has pointed out that all countries live in the same global village and should rise above estrangement and differences, uphold the principle of extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, and work together to build a community with a shared future for mankind. To this end, President Xi Jinping has also proposed four global initiatives, providing the public goods most needed by the world today. In particular, the recently proposed Global Governance Initiative aims to consolidate and strengthen the leading position of the United Nations, improve global governance through reform, and build a more just and equitable global governance system. Wang Yi expressed the hope that Italy will actively take part and work with China to practice true multilateralism and make new contributions to world peace and the progress of human civilization.

Sergio Mattarella agreed with the notion of humanity sharing a common future, and welcomed the series of major initiatives put forth by President Xi Jinping, believing that these initiatives fully meet the needs of the international community and the aspirations of people across all countries.

The two sides also exchanged views on issues including the situation in the Middle East and the Ukraine crisis. Both sides agreed that only by implementing the two-State solution can the Palestinian question be resolved in a comprehensive, just and lasting manner, and that the two sides will maintain communication on the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.

During his visit, Wang Yi also held talks with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani. They attended the 12th Joint Meeting of the China-Italy Government Committee and met the press together.
