On October 28, 2025, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Japan's new Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Wang Yi congratulated Toshimitsu Motegi on taking office once again as Foreign Minister. He said that China and Japan are each other's important close neighbors. China's policy toward Japan remains consistent and stable. China is ready to work with Japan to continue observing the principles and following the direction set in the four political documents between China and Japan to comprehensively advance the China-Japan strategic relationship of mutual benefit, and build a constructive and stable China-Japan relationship fit for the new era.
Wang Yi said that China has noticed some positive signals sent by the new Japanese cabinet. High-level exchanges are of great significance to the development of China-Japan relations. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the new Japanese cabinet will make a good start in engaging with China and put right "the first button of a shirt". The issue of history and the Taiwan question bear on the foundation of bilateral relations and the basic trust and faith between the two countries. He also expressed the hope that Japan will work with China to safeguard the political foundation of China-Japan relations and continue to improve and develop China-Japan relations along the right track.
Toshimitsu Motegi said that as the current international situation is undergoing profound changes, Japan and China shoulder increasing international responsibilities. China is an important neighbor of Japan, and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi attaches great importance to Japan-China relations. The Japanese side has never intended to decouple or sever supply chains with the Chinese side. He expressed the hope that the two sides will enhance exchanges at all levels, increase mutually beneficial cooperation, properly handle differences, and comprehensively advance a constructive and stable Japan-China strategic relationship of mutual benefit.
The two sides also exchanged views on some specific matters in bilateral relations.
