On February 11, 2026 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in Budapest.
Wang Yi said that China and Hungary enjoy a traditional friendship. Under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both countries, the two sides have upheld mutual respect, treated each other as equals, pursued mutual benefit and win-win results, and established an all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era, setting a stellar example of a new type of international relations. Chinese enterprises' investments and operations in Hungary have effectively promoted Hungary's economic development and improved people's livelihoods, delivering tangible benefits to the people. Facts have proven that China-Hungary friendship and cooperation fully serve the fundamental interests of the Hungarian nation and its people, and also contribute to the sound development of China-Europe relations. China appreciates Hungary's friendly policy toward China and is willing to continue mutual support with Hungary in safeguarding each other's legitimate rights and interests, and to remain a reliable strategic partner that Hungary can rely on in its development and revitalization process.
Wang Yi stated that over the past year, China's economy has forged ahead amid pressure, moved forward with innovation-led and high-quality development, and achieved the expected growth targets. This year marks the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan period. China will advance high-quality development and high-standard opening up, and welcome Hungary and other countries to share new development opportunities. The two sides should make good use of mechanisms and platforms such as the Joint Economic Committee and the Science and Technology Cooperation Committee, and expand cooperation in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, digital economy, and new energy, so as to boost their respective industrial transformation and upgrading. The Chinese government supports more enterprises in investing and doing business in Hungary, and believes that the Hungarian side will provide a better business environment and more policy support. China welcomes Hungarian friends to take full advantage of the visa-free policy to enjoy a spontaneous trip to China and experience firsthand a real, developing, progressive, and inclusive major country in the East.
Wang Yi noted that over the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU), bilateral cooperation has yielded fruitful results, fully proving that China is a partner rather than a rival, and an opportunity rather than a risk. He expressed the belief that with the passage of time, more and more European countries will come to realize that China is a trustworthy and long-term cooperative partner. Wang Yi expressed the hope that the Hungarian side will continue to actively promote cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European countries and the development of China-EU relations.

Péter Szijjártó said that regardless of changes in the international landscape, Hungary has always highly valued its friendship, mutual trust and cooperation with China. In recent years, Chinese enterprises' investments in Hungary have repeatedly hit new highs, which have driven Hungary's scientific and technological innovation and economic growth, created a large number of jobs, and significantly advanced Hungary's national development. Hungary is proud to be among the first European countries to join the Belt and Road Initiative. The Budapest-Belgrade Railway will soon be open to traffic, which is expected to further enhance regional connectivity. As the international order undergoes profound changes, China's status and role as a global major country are of vital importance. Hungary supports the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with China within the United Nations and other multilateral mechanisms. Hungary will continue to make active efforts to promote the sound development of EU-China relations.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis and other international and regional issues of mutual concern.
