Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on Japan's Announcement of Naming the Affiliated Islands of the Diaoyu Island
Updated: March 03, 2012 15:38

Q: It is learned that the Headquarters for Ocean Policy of the Japanese Cabinet announced on March 2 names of 39 uninhabited islands, including the affiliated islands of the Diaoyu Island. What is China's comment?

A: The Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands have been China's inherent territory since ancient times. China has indisputable sovereignty over them. China firmly opposes Japan's naming of the affiliated islands of the Diaoyu Island. I would like to reiterate that any unilateral move taken by Japan towards the Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands is illegal and invalid. No matter what names has the Japanese side given to the affiliated islands of the Diaoyu Island, it cannot in any way alter the fact that these islands belong to China. You may refer to the websites of the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs and the State Oceanic Administration for the standard names of the Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands.
