On April 12, 2024, Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Liu Jinsong summoned Chief Minister of the Embassy of Japan in China Yokochi Akira to lodge solemn representations and express its grave concern over and strongly disapprove Japan's recent negative moves towards China during the U.S.-Japan Summit meeting in Washington, D.C. and the U.S.-Japan-Philippines Trilateral Summit.
