On September 9, 2024, Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong introduced at the briefing on China's presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) that China will adopt "Carrying forward the Shanghai Spirit: SCO in Action" as the slogan of its presidency.

Sun Weidong said that since its establishment, the SCO, through the concerted efforts of all member states, has comprehensively and deeply advanced cooperation in the six major areas of politics, security, economy, culture, foreign exchanges, and institutional building, achieving remarkable cooperative results. It has grown into an important security shield, bridge for cooperation, bond of friendship, and constructive force, helping regional countries realize universal security, stability, shared development, and prosperity.

Sun Weidong said that as a multilateral mechanism, the SCO's greatest strength should be pragmatic and efficient. China put forward the slogan of "Carrying forward the Shanghai Spirit: SCO in Action" for its rotating presidency to send a clear signal to the region and the world that the SCO should not be a "highbrow orator" or a "club", but a "down-to-earth doer" and a doer with concrete actions. China will work with all parties to continue to carry forward the Shanghai Spirit, take more pragmatic measures and be more aggressive in enhancing cooperation in such practical areas as political security, connectivity, economy, trade and investment, green development and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, continue to advance the reform of operational mechanisms, and actively expand international exchanges and cooperation. This will bring more tangible benefits to members of the SCO family and people in the region.
