Special Envoy Zhai Jun of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Visits Iran

From September 23 to 24, 2024, Special Envoy Zhai Jun of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue visited Iran upon invitation. He met respectively with Ali Asghar Khaji, Iranian Foreign Minister's Senior Advisor for Special Political Affairs, and Mehdi Shoushtari, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General for Middle East and North Africa Affairs. The two sides had an exchange of views on China-Iran relations and the situation in the Middle East.

Zhai Jun said that in recent years, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China-Iran relations have maintained sound and stable development. China is ready to work with Iran to continuously deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Noting that the Middle East region is currently undergoing profound and complex changes, he said China supports Iran and regional countries in safeguarding sovereignty, security and development interests. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with Iran on regional affairs, promote comprehensive, just and lasting solutions to hotspot issues, and achieve regional peace, stability and development.

The Iranian side stated that the new Iranian government prioritizes the development of the Iran-China comprehensive strategic partnership in its diplomacy. Iran appreciates China's efforts in promoting intra-Palestinian reconciliation and thanks China for facilitating the improvement of Iran-Saudi Arabia relations. Iran is willing to enhance coordination and cooperation with China in Middle East affairs to jointly promote regional security and stability.

The two sides also had an exchange of views on the Gaza conflict and regional issues such as Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Sudan and Libya.
