From June 10 to 11, 2025, the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) Senior Officials' Meeting, East Asia Summit Senior Officials' Meeting and ASEAN Regional Forum Senior Officials' Meeting were held in Penang, Malaysia. Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong led a delegation to attend the meetings.

Sun Weidong said at the meetings that in the face of the evolving and turbulent international landscape, regional countries have made a common choice to pursue openness, cooperation, justice and win-win outcomes, not isolation, confrontation, hegemony and zero-sum mentality. China is ready to work with all parties to uphold the status of the APT as the main channel for East Asia cooperation, adhere to the right development direction of the East Asia Summit, revitalize the development momentum of the ASEAN Regional Forum, support the ASEAN-centered, open and inclusive regional architecture, unite to address the challenges of unilateralism and protectionism, uphold the free trade and multilateral trading system, and advocate the Asian values of peace, cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, and advance the building of a model of security for Asia that features sharing weal and woe, seeking common ground while shelving differences, and prioritizing dialogue and consultation, so as to jointly build a peaceful, safe and secure, prosperous, beautiful and amicable common home.

Sun Weidong sternly refuted the United States' defamation and smearing of China on issues such as the South China Sea and Taiwan. He emphasized that the United States' promotion of the so-called "Indo-Pacific Strategy", peddling of Cold War mentality and bloc confrontation, formation of exclusive groupings, provocation of disputes in the South China Sea region, and attempts to sow discord among regional countries are the biggest sources of chaos that undermine peace and stability in the region. China firmly opposes this. Sun Weidong also expounded on China's principled positions on issues such as the Korean Peninsula, the Myanmar issue, the Ukraine crisis and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Sun Weidong also met respectively with senior officials from Malaysia, the rotating chair of ASEAN, Russia, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, New Zealand and other countries, and had an exchange of views on bilateral relations, East Asia cooperation and issues of common interest and concern.
