On May 8, 2026, the Global Mediation Summit was held in Hong Kong. Attendees included Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) John Lee Ka-chiu, Commissioner of the Office of China’s Foreign Ministry in the HKSAR Cui Jianchun, Secretary-General of the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) Teresa Cheng, and Secretary for Justice of the HKSAR government Paul T. K. Lam, served as officiating guests and delivered speeches. Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Foreign Ministry Qi Dahai delivered a keynote speech.
Qi Dahai stated that the establishment and development of the IOMed should be perceived from a developmental perspective. Humanity has undergone a long process of shifting from armed confrontation to the peaceful settlement of disputes. Against the backdrop of complex and sensitive global challenges, mediation helps maintain relationships, rebuild mutual trust, and achieve win-win outcomes, thereby promoting a transition from conflict to cooperation. As the initiator and host country of the IOMed, China is willing to work with all parties to build an international dispute resolution ecosystem where mediation is “recognized, understood, and utilized”.
Hosted by the IOMed, the event gathered approximately 1,000 representatives from IOMed signatory states, internationally renowned mediators, and the legal and academic communities participating both online and offline.
