On July 9, the 106th session of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was opened in the Hague, the Netherlands. Mr. Tan Jian, Chinese Ambassador to the Netherlands and Permanent Representative to the OPCW led a delegation to attend the meeting, and relevant personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the Chinese Permanent Mission to the OPCW attended.
During the general debate of the 106th session, Ambassador Tan actively promoted the concept of a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind and the Global Security Initiative, and made an in-depth analysis of the current situation and challenges facing security governance in the field of chemical weapons disarmament and arms control. Ambassador Tan focused on elaborating China's position on several important agenda topics, i.e., urging Japan to speed up the destruction of chemical weapons abandoned in the territory of China, opposing the politicization of the OPCW, bringing the resolution of hotspot issues related to chemical weapons back on track, attaching importance to the peaceful uses of chemistry , international cooperation, the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, and the reform of industrial verification regime. Ambassador Tan also gave a detailed introduction to China's exemplary compliance with the Convention and its contribution to promoting the work of the OPCW.
