Your Excellency President Katonivere, Minister Rayalu, Minister Singh,
Dear Ms. Jenny Seeto, President of Fiji Chinese Association,
Chinese Compatriots in Fiji,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Dear Friends,
Good afternoon!
It gives me great pleasure to be here with you all to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People's Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival. First of all, please allow me to extend a warm welcome to President Katonivere and the First Lady, Minister Rayalu, Minister Singh. It is our greathonor to have you with us. I would also like to convey the cordial greetings and best wishes to my fellow Chinese compatriots in Fiji from the Communist Party of China, the Chinese government and people. Wish you and your family a happy Chinese National day and Mid-Autumn Festival!
The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals of the Chinese nation. In the Chinese culture, a full moon represents reunion. The Chinese people regard the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month as a festival for family reunion and celebration because on this day, the moon is the brightest and fullest of the year. On this day, families get together and eat moon cakes. How wonderful is that! The Mid-Autumn Festival has become a symbol of happiness, family reunion and national prosperity.
The bright moon witnessed China's development. Over the past 75 years, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, tremendous changes have taken place in China.
People are living a better life. Seventy-five years ago, people didn’t have enough food to eat, couldn't afford to go to school, and couldn't afford to see a doctor. Today, nearly one billion Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. More than 140 million people have attained comfortable housing. China has built the world's largest education system, social security system, medical and health care system. In contrast to scarcity in the past, all kinds of food products now abound, and dieting and fitness are becoming trendy.
Transportation is getting easier. When I was young, I had to tread muddy lanes to visit my relatives in the countryside. It took five hours by bus to get from my town to the nearby city. Today, paved roads link up every village, expressway reaches 95 percent of the population,45,000 kilometers of high-speed railway is put in place. Chinese people can just pack up and go on a trip whenever they want.
China's mountains are getting greener and waters clearer. Pollution used to be a serious problem in China. Faced with the challenge, we launched an all-out battle against pollution, in the belief that lucid waters and lush mountains are truly invaluable assets. Since 2013, Beijing has shut down more than 2,600 polluting enterprises. Thanks to the efforts, blue sky is no longer a luxury but a normal sight in Beijing. We’ve planted 36,000 square kilometers of forests annually in the past three years. That is more than the total land area of Belgium. Across China, the environment is well conserved.
China is getting more closely connected with the world. We are committed to mutual benefit, win-win cooperation and common development with all countries in the world. China has become a major trading partner of more than 140 countries and regions, contributing more than 30 percent to world economic growth for 14 consecutive years. China is the only country to hold a special international commodity import Expo, taking the initiative to share the super-large-scale market with other countries. We have put forward the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, aiming at the building of a community with a shared future for mankind. A more open China will always bring more opportunity for world development.
More importantly, we have found a path suitable for our own development. As a saying goes, you would only know if the shoes fit or not after you try. Practice has proved that socialism with Chinese characteristics suits China's national conditions. We will stick to the path and strive to achieve Chinese modernization,Inject more stability and positive energy into world peace and development.
Dear friends,
When the Mid-Autumn moon is full, it is natural for us to think of Taiwan compatriots. Taiwan has been an inseparable part of the Chinese territory since ancient times. People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share the same roots, language and culture. We are brothers of the same blood. The Taiwan question originated in a weak and ravaged China, and it will definitely end with China’s rejuvenation. There is no way out for “Taiwan independence”. China is bound to be reunified.
Dear friends,
The bright moon witnessed the fruitful results of China-Fiji relations. China and Fiji are good friends, good partners and good brothers. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 49 years ago, bilateral relations have made great progress, bringing tangible benefits to the two countries and peoples. Prime Minister Rabuka's visit to China last month was a complete success. The leaders of the two countries laid out blueprints for the development of China-Fiji relations. We are ready to work with Fiji to implement the consensus reached by our leaders, and bring the benefits of China-Fiji cooperation to more people.
The bright moon witnessed the hard work of the Chinese community in Fiji. In 1855, our ancestors crossed the sea to become part of the multi-ethnic Fijian family. Over nearly 170 years, Chinese compatriots in Fiji have lived together with the Fijian people, contributed to the development of Fiji. In the past year, the Chinese community have done a lot. You organized activities to celebrate traditional Chinese festivals which have strengthened unity among Chinese compatriots. You promoted Chinese language education through activities such as International Chinese Language Day, the Chinese Bridge Competition, and the Water Cube Cup Chinese Song Competition. This built a bridge of communication between China and Fiji. You helped the Fijian people tide over the difficult times with your own actions and donations during the epidemic and natural disasters. You extended a helping hand to fellow Chinese compatriots in need. Here I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for your efforts!
Next year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Fiji diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of Chinese people coming to Fiji. On this important occasion, I would like to share with you the following:
I hope you could make greater contributions to Fiji's development. A good life is earned through hard work. A bright future is created through cooperation. We hope that all of you love the country where you live while remembering the country where you came from, continue to carry forward the fine virtues such as diligence, courage, unity, dedication and inclusiveness, continue to work with all ethnic groups in Fiji, continue to participate in and make greater contributions to the development of Fiji.
I hope you could make greater contributions to China-Fiji friendship. The Chinese community in Fiji have always been an important force for friendship between our two countries. We hope that all of you will give full play to your advantages, and build on the momentum of Prime Minister Rabuka's state visit to further promote China-Fiji cooperation for a community with a shared future.
I hope you could make greater contributions to the unity of the Chinese community in Fiji. The traditional virtues of the Chinese nation include good-neighborliness and mutual assistance. We hope that all of you can take root in the community, carry forward the tradition of mutual help, inherit the excellent culture tradition of the Chinese nation, participate in community governance, and constantly enhance community cohesion, aiming to make the Chinese community a model community in Fiji.
