Dear Sri Lankan brothers and sisters,
Ayubowan!Vanakkam!Assalamu alaykum!
October 1, 2024, marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. On behalf of the Chinese Embassy, I would like to extend warm regards and best wishes to all the people of Sri Lanka.
Over the past 75 years, under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has made significant strides that have reshaped its position in the world from economic transformation to social progress.
Since its establishment, China has transformed from a primarily agrarian society into the world’s second-largest economy. The implementation of market reforms in the late 20th century spurred unprecedented economic growth. By embracing globalization and fostering innovation, China has become a manufacturing powerhouse and a hub for technology development. The Belt and Road Initiative exemplifies China’s commitment to global trade and infrastructure development, further solidifying its role on the international stage.
One of the most notable achievements has been the dramatic reduction of poverty. Over the past 46 years, hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of poverty, a feat recognized by the United Nations as a significant contribution to global poverty alleviation efforts.
China has emerged as a leader in technological innovation, particularly in areas such as telecommunications, e-commerce and renewable energy. Companies like Huawei and Alibaba have set benchmarks for innovation and market reach. The government’s emphasis on research and development has fueled advancements in artificial intelligence, biotechnology and clean energy, positioning China at the forefront of the global technology race.
Culturally, China has witnessed a renaissance with a renewed interest in its rich history and traditions. The promotion of Chinese culture, language and arts has fostered a sense of national pride. Events like the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and Winter Olympics in 2022 showcased China’s cultural heritage and its ability to host global events, enhancing its international image.
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, it is essential to recognize the achievements that have shaped the nation. From economic reforms to cultural advancements and technological innovation, China’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Looking ahead, China aims to continue its path of development contributing to global peace and prosperity.
Over the past 75 years, China and Sri Lanka have stood in solidarity in times of challenge and pulled together in the face of difficulties. Now, China is Sri Lanka’s largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), second largest trading partner and third largest source of tourists. Multilevel China-Sri Lanka cooperation in various fields has played an important role in promoting Sri Lanka’s economic and social development and improving the well-being of the Sri Lankan people. Major projects such as the Outpatient Building of the National Hospital, the Polonnaruwa Kidney Disease Hospital, the Superior Courts complex, BMICH, the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, the Port City Colombo, Colombo International Container Terminals, the Hambantota Port and the Southern Expressway, etc. are vivid demonstrations of the amity and friendship between our two countries. History has repeatedly and will continue to prove that the closer the relationship between China and Sri Lanka, the more beneficial it will be to Sri Lanka’s development and the livelihood of her people, and the more capable Sri Lanka will be in resisting external risks and challenges.
The people of Sri Lanka have now entered a new era and are writing a new chapter of their history. Although it takes time, patience and hard work, I firmly believe that, under the strong leadership of H.E. President Dissanayake, brotherly Sri Lankan people will surely overcome all sorts of risks and challenges gradually, revive national economy to achieve prosperity. Sri Lanka, the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, will shine even brighter. The China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership based on sincere mutual assistance and ever-lasting friendship will continue to gain great momentum on a higher level.
Wish China and Sri Lanka enjoy greater prosperity and everlasting friendship.
