Updated: April 25, 2025 07:39(From Chinese Embassy in Papua New Guinea)

On April 24, The National published Chinese Ambassador Yang Xiaoguang's interview on the abuse of tariffs by the U.S.

Ambassador Yang said that the U.S. abuse of tariffs runs counter to fundamental economic principles, and severely undermines the multilateral trading system. It is a typical act of unilateralism, protectionism and economic bullying. The U.S. puts its selfish interests above the common good of the international community, being tantamount to depriving countries, especially Global South countries, of their right to development.

Ambassador Yang said that tariff or trade wars have no winners. China does not want to fight these wars but is not scared of them. China’s door to the outside world will always be open. We will stand together with PNG and other countries, firmly oppose the idea that "might is right", and safeguard the international fairness and justice and legitimate rights and interests of all countries.

PNG mainstream media including Post-Courier and EMTV also reported Ambassador Yang's statement.
