On May 3, 2025, the Chinese Embassy hosted an open house presenting the northwestern Chinese province Gansu. Ambassador Xie Feng delivered remarks. Vice Governor of Gansu Wang Bing spoke at the event. Minister Jing Quan, Minister Qiu Wenxing and over 300 guests from various sectors attended the VIP session, including Secretary of the District of Columbia Kimberly Bassett, Secretary of the Maryland Susan Lee, Managing Director and World Bank Group Chief Administrative Officer Zhang Wencai. Over 10,000 local Americans visited the Embassy.
In his remarks entitled “China: A Steady Presence in a World of Uncertainty”, Ambassador Xie noted Gansu as a cradle of the Chinese civilization through which people can see a China that is diverse, resilient, welcoming and inclusive. Gansu was once a frontline in China’s fight against poverty—and it tells a story of resilience and self-reliance. Gansu lies at the heart of the ancient Silk Road and reflects China’s openness and inclusion. No matter how the world changes, China remains committed to steady growth and greater openness.
Ambassador Xie stressed that openness brings progress, while isolation leads to stagnation. In today’s global economy, no country can thrive alone. Trade is not a zero-sum game. Building barriers only blocks the flow of shared growth. Tariff hikes benefit no one. They disrupt business, raise costs, rattle financial markets and slow down global growth. China does not want a trade war, but is not intimidated by it. “We are defending not only our own legitimate rights and interests but also the order of international trade. If the U.S. wants to talk, it should act in the spirit of equality, respect, and reciprocity,” said Xie.
Visitors enjoyed cultural and musical performances with dazzling Silk Road characteristics. They also immersed themselves in Digital Dunhuang Immersive Exhibition and had an in-depth experience of the Mogao grottoes culture. Boothes featured Qingyang paper-cutting, Lanzhou engraved gourds and Lanzhou beef noodles were crowded with visitors all day long. The Gansu tourism photo exhibition, science and technology exhibition, traditional Chinese medicine exhibition and calligraphy exhibition also attracted a large number of visitors.
