On May 19, H.E. Chen Chuandong, Chinese Ambassador to Jordan, and H.E. Alberto Mendes, World Food Programme (WFP) Representative in Jordan, jointly announced the launch of a Chinese government-funded school feeding program for Syrian refugee students in Jordan. Counselor Cheng Yongru was present at the event.
Ambassador Chen commended Jordan’s important role in hosting Syrian refugees and safeguarding regional peace and stability, as well as WFP’s efforts in supporting Syrian refugees in the country. He emphasized that the Chinese government, guided by the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, actively participates in international humanitarian efforts. This program, he noted, is a concrete step in advancing the Global Development Initiative and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and a vivid example of South-South cooperation. He called on the international community to continue supporting Syrian refugees.
Mr. Mendes expressed his sincere appreciation for China’s support. He stressed that such assistance is especially timely and invaluable amid the current acute shrinking of humanitarian funding, noting that the program will provide nutritious school meals for 30,000 Syrian refugee children and promote women’s employment through local procurement.
The program is funded by China’s Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund.
