On June 12, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution concerning the Iranian nuclear issue, jointly tabled by the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. Member states of the IAEA engaged in intense debates over the issue.
Ambassador Li Song, Permanent Representative of China to the IAEA, stated that the Iranian nuclear issue is currently at a crucial crossroads. The priority for the international community is to work together to promote political and diplomatic engagement and dialogue based on the principle of mutual respect. Iran nuclear issue can only be properly resolved through political and diplomatic efforts and safeguards cooperation within the framework of the IAEA on the premise of fully respecting Iran's legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. We call on IAEA Member States to support the Secretariat and Iran in maintaining communication, enhancing mutual engagement, and strengthening cooperation, while jointly opposing any actions that provoke confrontation or undermine diplomatic dialogue and collaboration.
Among the 33 IAEA Board members with voting rights, China, Russia, and Burkina Faso voted against the resolution, while 11 developing countries — including Brazil, South Africa, India and Egypt — abstained.
