From June 19 to 20, Chinese Ambassador to Ireland Zhao Xiyuan traveled to Cork to participate in the Asia Matters 2025 Business Summit, where he delivered remarks on agricultural cooperation and global food security.
Ambassador Zhao underscored that “food is the first necessity of the people,” affirming China’s strong commitment to safeguarding food security and addressing climate-related challenges. He highlighted China’s multifaceted efforts—including combating desertification, advancing agricultural technology, and fostering international partnerships—to boost food production capacity and promote sustainable farming practices. These measures, he said, are critical to building a fair and resilient global food system.
Zhao also noted China’s dedication to agricultural collaboration with other nations including Ireland. He stated that China attaches great importance to developing agricultural cooperation with countries around the world, including Ireland. As part of these efforts, China has implemented zero-tariff policies on agricultural products from 53 African nations and has sent assistance teams to support agricultural development in countries across the Global South.
Noel Grealish, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and the Marine; James O’Connor, Chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment; and European Commissioner Michael McGrath also attended the summit.
