On June 23, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) convened an emergency meeting to discuss the recent U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Ambassador Li Song, China’s Permanent Representative to the IAEA, delivered a statement outlining China’s position. He strongly condemned the U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear facilities that are under IAEA safeguards. He pointed out that this was another serious development undermining the political and diplomatic process surrounding the Iranian nuclear issue, following the U.S. unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He stressed that the United States must bear historical responsibility for its actions.Ambassador Li called on all parties to stay committed to a political resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue. He urged efforts to reduce tensions and resume dialogue. He also emphasized the importance of firmly upholding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and expressed China’s support for the IAEA in fulfilling its mandate impartially and playing a constructive role.
During the meeting, many countries expressed serious concern over the current developments, noting that attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities violate the UN Charter and international law. Delegations reaffirmed that political and diplomatic efforts remain the only correct path to resolving the Iranian nuclear issue and called on all relevant parties to cease hostilities and resume dialogue and negotiations as soon as possible.
