On August 4, 2025, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University hosted a recovery ceremony for Tonga's first group of patients referred to China for medical treatment. The event was attended in person by H.E. Tau'aika 'Uta'atu, Tongan Ambassador to China, patient representatives with their family members, officials of the Foreign Affairs Office, Health Commission of Shandong Province and the medical team of Qilu Hospital. Chinese Ambassador to Tonga H.E. Liu Weimin and Tonga's Ministry of Health CEO Dr. Reynold 'Ofanoa participated virtually.

Ambassador Liu congratulated the recovered patients and expressed appreciation to medical staff and all contributing parties. He said that this is the first successful medical referral between China and Pacific countries, representing both a breakthrough in China-Tonga health care cooperation and is another testament to the deep bilateral friendship. He hoped to promote solid progress in bilateral cooperation.
Ambassador 'Uta'atu said that this successful referral vividly represented the strong 27-year diplomatic partnership between Tonga and China. He hoped to expand the collaboration related to people’s livelihood and elevate bilateral relations to new height.
Dr. 'Ofanoa sincerely thanked China for its efficient arrangements and high-quality medical services. He said that this cooperation reflected the close ties between Tonga and China. He looked forward to further enhancing bilateral cooperation in the future.
