On July 30, ambassador He Rulong attended the China-Iceland Youth Exchange and delivered a speech. Mr. Gunnarsson, former Minister of Education and Culture of Iceland attended the event along with students from Tsinghua University, the University of Iceland, Reykjavik University, and the Iceland University of the Arts as well as counsellor Yang Jing of the embassy.
Ambassador He Rulong welcomed the gathering of Chinese and Icelandic students, noting that the World Youth Conference for Peace was just held in China, making this youth exchange particularly timely. He emphasized that youth exchange contribute to peace-building and the building of a community with a shared future for humanity. He encouraged Tsinghua University students to make full use of this social practice to broaden their international perspectives and enhance innovation capabilities with a view to contributing to high-quality development. Drawing inspirations from his work in government and his travel experiences to China, Mr. Gunnarsson encouraged students from both countries to deepen mutual understanding, overcome prejudices, and build lasting friendships.
Students from both sides started friendly and lively discussions at the Youth Exchange. Tsinghua students found the exchange highly rewarding and the Icelandic students looked forward to visiting or studying in China at an earlier date. Both students expressed their willingness in writing a new chapter of the friendship between China and Iceland.
