On 27 August , Consul General Chen Shijie visited the University of Waikato and met with Vice-Chancellor Professor Neil Quigley for an exchange of views on strengthening China–New Zealand educational cooperation. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Alister Jones was also present.

Consul General Chen highlighted the fruitful achievements in people-to-people exchanges since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand, and commended the university for its open and inclusive approach to international education and its efforts in advancing cooperation with China and supporting Chinese students. He noted that education is a key highlight of bilateral relations and reaffirmed the Consulate General’s support for deepening academic exchanges, faculty and student visits, and joint programs to build a future-oriented model of international education cooperation.
Vice-Chancellor Quigley reviewed the university’s collaboration with Chinese institutions, stressing the value of this partnership and pledging to further expand cooperation in research and teaching, while continuing to provide high-quality education and comprehensive support for Chinese students.

Following the meeting, Consul General Chen toured the university’s history gallery and held a discussion with representatives of Chinese students.
