Updated: September 27, 2025 10:34(From Chinese Consulate General in Calgary)

On September 24, 2025, Consul General Mme. Zhao Liying published a byline article titled Seizing Opportunities to Jointly Write a New Chapter in China-Canada Energy Cooperation on the Yellowknifer. The full text is as follows:

Recently, the vessel Wudang, carrying 160,000 cubic meters of Canadian liquefied natural gas(LNG), set sail from the Port of Kitimat in British Columbia and arrived at the Jiangsu Rudong LNG terminal in China. This marks another significant breakthrough following the shipment of crude oil, representing a milestone in China-Canada energy cooperation.

China and Canada have strong complementary advantages in energy cooperation. From Alberta to British Columbia, from dense oil sands to abundant natural gas, Canada is endowed with unique energy resources. China is the world’s largest manufacturing country, as well as the largest energy consumer and importer. Since the operation of TMX in May last year, China has become the largest buyer of the pipeline’s increased output. Canadian crude oil export to China has achieved a historic leap, exceeding CAD 4.7 billion. Among them, Alberta’s export has surpassed CAD 3.9 billion, making it the biggest beneficiary.

China-Canada energy cooperation faces significant opportunities. Under the present circumstances of escalating unilateral tariffs and trade protectionism, China is an important partner in Canada’s approach to becoming an energy superpower and achieving economic and trade diversification. With the increased capacity of Canada’s TMX project and the operation of LNG projects, China’s stable, super-large market will bring boundless opportunities for Canada’s oil, gas, and other energy industries. Major Chinese oil and gas companies have been deeply engaged in Canada for many years, with total investments exceeding CAD 75 billion.  They would have the willingness and capability to further expand investments and production in a more favorable policy environment.

China and Canada have enormous potential for cooperation in the field of new energy. Canada is advantaged in the hydrogen sector as well as critical minerals resources. China is playing a leading role in green and renewable energy as the world’s largest producer of hydrogen, the largest producer and consumer of electric vehicles and the largest manufacturer and investor in solar and wind power equipment. Strengthening cooperation in new energy, China and Canada will make significant contributions to global efforts in addressing climate change and achieving the dual carbon goals.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties  and the 20th anniversary of strategic partnership between China and Canada. At this new historical juncture, China-Canada energy cooperation carries profound significance and global importance. It is hoped that the energy circles of both countries seize the opportunities to deepen exchanges and cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit. We will jointly write a new chapter in energy cooperation and promote the sound and stable development of bilateral relations.
