Remarks by Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho Yang Xiaokun at the Handover Ceremony of Medicines and Equipment
Updated: January 01, 2026 16:57(From Chinese Embassy in Lesotho)

First of all, please allow me to pay respects to:
His Majesty King Letsie III,
The Right Honorable Prime Minister Matekane,
Honorable President of the Senate,
Honorable Speaker of the National Assembly,
His Lordship the Chief Justice,
Honorable Deputy Prime Minister,
Honourable Ministers in His Majesty’s cabinet, especially
Honorable Minister of Health,
Esteemed government officials,
Friends from Media Houses,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Since arriving in Lesotho I have had the privilege of attending many handover events for donations and cooperation projects between the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Lesotho. Yet, today’s ceremony holds a meaningful place in my heart.

At most projects celebrations, my greatest hope is that the initiatives will bring meaningful transformation to the people of Lesotho. As we present these donations of medicines and equipment today, I must add a sincere wish: I hope these supplies will only be used when absolutely necessary. Above all, I want our Lesotho friends to enjoy good health so that they rarely, if ever, need to rely on what we are handing over today.

In other projects like the Mpiti to Sehlabathebe Road valued at 700 million RMB (around M1.7 billion), the first phase of the Mafeteng Solar Power Plant with an investment of 480 million RMB (about M1.2 billion), and the Maseru District Hospital built through a 450 million RMB (around M1.1 billion) grant, their impact is easy to see in the numbers and in the concrete results. These initiatives improve travel, bring electricity to homes, and expand access to healthcare. Their contribution is visible in daily life. However, today’s medical donation is different. The book value of this batch of supplies may not be large, but its impact is invaluable. These medicines and equipment embody the deep friendship between the Chinese and Lesotho people, a friendship built not on figures but on brotherly spirit that transcends geographical distances and remains steadfast through the passage of time.

Large projects like roads, hospitals, or power plants often take years of planning and construction before we gather to celebrate them. Unlike simply handing over an infrastructure project, China’s medical assistance to Lesotho is never a one-off gesture. Since we dispatched the first medical team to Lesotho in 1997, China’s support to Lesotho health system is and continues to be unwavering, consistent and anchored in mutual trust. Over more than two decades, regardless of seasons, generations of Chinese medical workers have dedicated themselves to this cause in succession. Moreover, batches of medicines and equipment have been continuously delivered. This is a steadfast, long-term commitment where we stand as companions, with no expectation of return.

Some symbols of our cooperation like the National Convention Center, the Parliament Building, the National Library, the New State House, and the Maseru District Hospital, are prominent, tangible fruits of China-Lesotho friendly cooperation, visible for all to enjoy. Today’s handover of these medicines and equipment comes with no grand gestures or plaques to mark the occasion. Nonetheless in their quiet way, these supplies will stand guard on the frontlines of health, offering comfort and strengthening the hands of health workers when emergencies arise. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the true essence of sincere compassion: not loud, not seeking praise but simply focusing on being there for each other when it matters most. In this case, this donation stands to safeguard the safety and well-being of our dear Basotho friends.

I am deeply honored to take part in this special handover ceremony. Looking ahead, I hold a simple yet sincere wish: may the people of Lesotho enjoy long, healthy lives and may these medical supplies bring quick relief to those in need. I will firmly uphold China’s Africa policy of sincerity, real results, amity, and good faith—not just as words on paper, but as a solemn promise to nurture our friendship. I also extend my heartfelt appreciation to the hard work and dedication of generations of Chinese medical teams, who regarded Lesotho as their second home and cared and saved the lives of patients with deep compassion. And I will cherish every touching story of health restored because they remind us why our partnership matters. For over two decades, this medical assistance has been a warm thread connecting our two nations. May this bond grow even stronger, and may the people of China and Lesotho walk hand in hand, supporting each other as we strive toward healthier, happier, and more prosperous futures together!

Thank you all!
