On January 15th, Ambassador Jia Guide, the Permanent Representative of China to the UNOG and other International Organizations in Switzerland, attended the chairmanship handover ceremony for G77 and China Geneva Chapter. Kenya assumed chairmanship of G77 and China Geneva Chapter for the year 2026.

Ambassador Jia noted that developing countries, such as those represented by G77 and China, should have a bigger role to play in Geneva. As the world is witnessing profound changes unseen in a century, G77 and China needs stronger solidarity to oppose unilateral and bullying acts, deeper cooperation to deliver the UNCTAD 16 outcome and better coordination to uphold true multilateralism. Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China is always a developing country and will always be a member of the developing world, and would like to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment and development with fellow developing members. In October 2025, the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee adopted China’s 15th Five-Year Plan Recommendations, which will provide stronger impetus for economic cooperation with other developing countries. In the future, China hopes to work with members of G77 and China for building a community with a shared future for humanity, implementing the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiative, as well as realizing the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan of UNCTAD and on-site representatives of G77 and China highly commented the role of G77 and China, and stated that they will continue to support multilateralism, tackle the global challenges collectively and strive for a sustainable development.
