On September 7, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Chinese National People's Congress hosted a breakfast session for the National Parliament Leaders of the Asian-Pacific Region of Inter-Parliament Union and delivered a speech at the hotel he was staying.
Parliamentarian leaders from Cambodia, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, South Korea, Viet Nam, India, Laos, etc. as well as Permanent Representatives to the United Nations from Korea, Papua New Guinea, etc. participated in the breakfast session. The atmosphere at the session was warm, cordial and friendly.
In his speech, Wu said that the Asia and Pacific Region is at a very important place in the world. Currently the Region is stable in general and the regional cooperation covers broad areas and various forms and has scored remarkable effects. The rapid development of Asia-Pacific Regional cooperation not only plays a significant role in maintaining regional peace and stability, but also effectively facilitates the world stability and prosperity.
Wu pointed out that the members of the Asian-Pacific Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union are widely represented in this region and constitute an important force for promoting peace, cooperation and development in the Asian and Pacific Region. Under the new international situation, exchanges at various levels among the parliaments of the countries in the Region should be upgraded. The opportunity presented by this conference should be fully utilized to strengthen coordination, expand consensus and jointly make the conference a success.
Wu emphasized that China is a member of the Asian and Pacific family, as well as a participant and builder of the peace, cooperation and development of the Region. The Chinese people will as always work with parliaments in the Asian and Pacific Region to incessantly enhance the understanding, friendship, trust and cooperation among the people and jointly build an even better future for the Asian and Pacific Region.
The parliamentarian leaders at the breakfast session made positive comments on the friendly and cooperative relations between their respective countries and China, highly appreciated China's good neighbor policy toward neighboring countries, and deemed China's development to be a strong impetus to Asia-Pacific development. They all agreed to Chairman Wu's opinions on the situation in the Asian-Pacific Region and the cooperative prospects there. They stressed that parliaments in Asian-Pacific countries should strengthen their friendly cooperation through such multi-lateral mechanism as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum and contribute to enhancing bilateral relations and promoting regional cooperation.
Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the National People's Congress Sheng Huaren and other major members of the Chinese delegation participated in the breakfast session.
Being one of the geopolitical groups within the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Asian-Pacific Group is currently composed of 25 members.
On the noon of the same day, Wu also participated as invited in the luncheon session of the Parliament Speakers of ASEAN, China, Japan and the ROK.
