Wang Yi Has a Phone Call with Japanese Lead Person of the China-Japan High-Level Political Dialogue Takeo Akiba

On October 21, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi had a phone call with the Japanese lead person of the China-Japan high-level political dialogue and Secretary General of Japan's National Security Secretariat Takeo Akiba at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that since its formation, the government led by Shigeru Ishiba has confirmed that the government will comprehensively promote the strategic relationship of mutual benefit between China and Japan. It has no intention of decoupling or severing industrial and supply chains with China and adheres to the bilateral consensus on the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean. The Japanese government also confirmed its willingness to carry out high-level exchanges as well as dialogue and cooperation in various fields with China, and China-Japan relations have achieved a steady start.

Wang Yi stressed that China maintains continuity and stability in its policy toward Japan and is willing to continue to promote the sound and stable development of China-Japan relations in accordance with the principles and directions set out in the four political documents between China and Japan. He expressed the hope that Japan will respect China's core interests, honor its commitment to the one-China principle, work with China in the same direction, uphold the positioning of China and Japan as cooperative partners rather than threats to each other, support each other's peaceful development, maintain and consolidate the political foundation of bilateral relations, inject new vitality into bilateral cooperation in various fields, and jointly contribute to regional peace and stability. He also expressed the hope that the new Japanese cabinet would bring new momentum and foster fresh development in China-Japan relations.

Takeo Akiba said that Japan remains committed to comprehensively promoting the strategic relationship of mutual benefit between Japan and China and building a constructive and stable Japan-China relationship. Japan is ready to work with China to focus on the overall development of bilateral relations, maintain the current momentum in the development of bilateral relations, engage in forward-looking and strategic dialogues, and send more positive signals to the world.

The two sides agreed to continue making good use of the China-Japan high-level political dialogue mechanism and maintain regular communication.
