On June 8, 2025 local time, Vice President Han Zheng met with Secretary-General of the United Nations (U.N.) António Guterres on the sidelines of the third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France.
Han Zheng said that the current international situation is marked by changes and instabilities. President Xi Jinping pointed out that the more turbulent and complex the international situation becomes, the more imperative it is to uphold and defend the authority of the United Nations, firmly uphold the U.N.-centered international system, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter. China has consistently supported the United Nations in playing its central role in international affairs. Han Zheng said that President Xi Jinping's decision to send a delegation led by him to this United Nations Ocean Conference demonstrates China's firm support for multilateralism, the implementation of the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the U.N.'s work in particular. China is ready to take the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations this year as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation with the United Nations, practice true multilateralism, and make new contributions to global peace and development.
António Guterres said that the world today is facing severe challenges. China has long provided firm and strong support for the cause of the United Nations and serves as a key pillar in defending multilateralism and promoting global sustainable development. China is a crucial cooperation partner of the United Nations. The United Nations is willing to further deepen comprehensive cooperation with China, defend multilateralism and the international order, safeguard world peace and security, and better respond to challenges such as protecting marine biodiversity and tackling climate change, so as to achieve the U.N. 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Han Zheng said that China appreciates the U.N.'s consistent adherence to the one-China principle. He expressed the hope that relevant U.N. agencies will remain vigilant against attempts by certain forces to distort or challenge the General Assembly Resolution 2758. António Guterres said that the U.N.'s position on the one-China matter is clear and firm, and that the United Nations will continue to firmly abide by the General Assembly Resolution 2758 on this important matter of principle.
