On the afternoon of October 13, 2025, Premier Li Qiang of the State Council met with President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama, who is in China for the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing.
Li Qiang said that over the years, China and Ghana have upheld sincerity, friendship, and mutual support, with the traditional friendship between the two countries growing ever stronger. Last year, China-Ghana relations were elevated to a strategic partnership, bringing new opportunities for bilateral cooperation across various fields. President Xi Jinping will hold a meeting with President John Dramani Mahama to chart a new blueprint for further deepening China-Ghana relations. China is ready to work with Ghana to carry forward the traditional friendship, expand pragmatic cooperation, and deepen and solidify the strategic partnership between the two countries, so as to bring more benefits to the two peoples.
Li Qiang pointed out that China firmly supports Ghana in pursuing a development path suited to its national conditions and is ready to continue high-quality Belt and Road cooperation with Ghana, deepen cooperation in trade and investment, infrastructure construction, agriculture and fisheries, energy, and other fields, and work together toward realizing the goal of modernization. He expressed hope to make good use of China's zero-tariff policy for 100 percent tariff lines for African countries having established diplomatic relations with China to open new prospects for China-Ghana economic and trade cooperation. The two sides should take the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges as an opportunity to promote cooperation in education, culture, tourism, health, and other areas, enhancing the public's sense of gains from friendly cooperation between China and Ghana. As important countries of the Global South, China and Ghana should strengthen coordination to encourage all countries to jointly uphold multilateralism and free trade, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, and safeguard the common interests of the international community.
John Dramani Mahama highly praised President Xi Jinping's important address at the opening ceremony of the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women and extended congratulations on the complete success of the Meeting. He said that Ghana was among the first African countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. Ghana sincerely appreciates China's valuable support and assistance over the years and appreciates China's zero-tariff policy for products from African countries that have established diplomatic relations with China. Ghana will remain firmly committed to the one-China principle and looks forward to taking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries as an opportunity to strengthen high-level exchanges, promote cooperation in such areas as trade, investment, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and mining within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, explore new growth drivers in the digital economy and artificial intelligence, and enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Ghana supports the Global Governance Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and is willing to deepen multilateral collaboration with China, firmly defend multilateralism and safeguard international fairness and justice.
