President Xi Jinping Holds a Private Meeting with U.S. President Donald J. Trump at Zhongnanhai

On the morning of May 15, President Xi Jinping held a private meeting with U.S. President Donald J. Trump at Zhongnanhai.

As spring fades into summer, Zhongnanhai is steeped in lush verdure. Upon arrival, President Trump was warmly received by President Xi. The two heads of state strolled and conversed, and paused from time to time to admire the stalwart ancient trees and Chinese roses of different colors.

President Xi noted that President Trump’s visit has been a historic and landmark one. We have agreed on a new vision of a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, and reached important common understandings on keeping economic and trade ties stable, expanding practical cooperation in various fields, properly addressing each other’s concerns, and enhancing communication and coordination on international and regional issues. The visit helps promote mutual understanding, deepen mutual trust, and advance the well-being of people in both countries. This once again attests to the aspiration of both nations and the expectation of all nations in the world that China and the United States need to realize peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, and find the right way to get along well with each other. President Trump wants to make America great again, and I am committed to leading the Chinese people to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. By strengthening cooperation, China and the United States can contribute to each other’s development and revitalization. The two sides should effectively implement our important understandings, cherish the hard-earned momentum, move in the right direction, steer clear of interference, and promote the steady development of the relationship.

President Trump thanked President Xi for welcoming him to Zhongnanhai. The visit to China has been both very successful and unforgettable. It is captivating the attention of the world. The two sides agreed on many things, made many deals, and worked out many issues. This is good for both countries and the world. President Xi is my old friend, I have a lot of respect for you, and we have forged a good relationship. The U.S.-China relationship is very important, and it will definitely get better and better. I wish to keep this kind of sincere and deep discussion with President Xi. I very much look forward to welcoming President Xi in Washington.
