On September 30, 2026, President Xi Jinping and Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Xi Jinping noted that China and Brunei enjoy a time‑honored friendship that has stood the test of time. As the two countries forge ahead on the path toward modernization, they have set an example for countries of different sizes to respect each other, treat each other as equals and pursue common development. Over the past 35 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, China and Brunei have enjoyed deepening political mutual trust, fruitful cooperation across diverse fields and closer people‑to‑people exchanges. During Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah’s state visit to China last year, the two sides reached important consensus on building a China‑Brunei community with a shared future, steering bilateral relations into a new historical stage of development.

Xi Jinping stressed that he attaches great importance to the development of China‑Brunei relations. He stands ready to work with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah to take the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to carry forward the time‑honored friendship, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, continue to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, promote more in-depth and solid progress in the building of the China‑Brunei community with a shared future, better benefit the two peoples, and make greater contributions to regional prosperity and stability.

Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations 35 years ago, Brunei and China have always trusted, respected and understood each other. In 2025, the two countries reached important consensus on building a community with a shared future. He looks forward to taking the 35th anniversary of Brunei‑China diplomatic ties as an opportunity to further consolidate the bond between the two countries, deepen exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade and investment, national defense, and people‑to‑people fields, work hand‑in‑hand for the prosperity and progress of both countries, and bring greater benefits to the two peoples.
