Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s Remarks on China’s Emergency Humanitarian Assistance for the Earthquake in Afghanistan

2022-06-25 19:55

Q: After the earthquake struck Afghanistan, the Chinese government pledged to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan for quake relief. Could you update us on the progress of the assistance?

A: The strong earthquake that shook Afghanistan on June 22 is the most devastating quake the country has experienced in the past 20 years. It has killed at least 1,500 people, injured more than 2,000 and destroyed over 3,000 houses. The number of casualties is still rising. Right after the earthquake, the Chinese government decided to provide 50 million RMB yuan worth of emergency humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, including tents, sleep blankets, camp beds and other supplies urgently needed in quake-hit areas. The first batch of those supplies is scheduled to depart for Afghanistan by charter flights on June 27. In the next few days, China will coordinate closely with the Afghan interim government to ensure the rapid delivery of the relief supplies into the hands of the people in need.

“Merciless as the disaster is, our shared humanity will see us through.” We believe that with the concerted efforts of the Afghan interim government and people from across society, and with help pouring in from the international community, people hit by the quake will be able to pull through soon and rebuild faster from the disaster and that life will go back to normal as quickly as possible in the quake-hit areas.
