On February 2, 2023, Foreign Minister Qin Gang held talks with President of the 77th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly Csaba Kőrösi in Beijing.

Qin Gang said that the world today is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, with the COVID-19 pandemic still lingering, geopolitical conflicts resurfacing and global challenges emerging one after another. As all parties place high hopes on the UN, the UN should further play an important role in global governance. In this regard, Qin Gang mentioned the following points: the UN should stay committed to speaking and acting impartially, safeguard peace and security, and stand for fairness and justice; the UN should uphold inclusiveness for the benefit of all, put development at the center of the global agenda, and ensure that the fruits of development benefit more people across countries in a more equitable way; the UN should uphold true multilateralism, improve global governance, and build consensus through communication and consultation; the UN should uphold openness and inclusiveness, abandon ideological confrontation, and promote mutual learning among civilizations. Noting that the UN General Assembly is the UN’s main Charter-based body with universal representation, Qin Gang said that China will continue to fully support the work of the UN General Assembly and its president.

Qin Gang stressed that China firmly upholds the international system with the UN at its core, the international order underpinned by international law, and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China’s development adds to the force for peace and justice. China will hold high the banner of true multilateralism, promote the overall progress of mankind with Chinese modernization, and create new opportunities for the world with its new development. China will take the implementation of the Global Development Initiative as an opportunity to accelerate the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and join hands with other countries to advance the Global Security Initiative and address new challenges to international security.

Kőrösi noted that China is an important partner of the UN, and expressed appreciation for China’s strong support for the UN over the years. The UN attaches great importance to China’s influence and leading role as a major country, and stands ready to work with China to strengthen multilateralism, improve global governance, advocate dialogue rather than confrontation, and address global challenges in solidarity. The UN remains firm in its commitment to the one-China principle, and will never deviate from it.

The two sides also exchanged views on international hotspot issues of common interest and concern. With regards to Japan’s plan to discharge nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean, both sides stressed the need to take a responsible attitude and protect the planet Earth, the only home for mankind.
