President Jiang Zemin's Letters of Congratulations on the DPRK-ROK Summit

On 15 June, President Jiang Zemin wrote letters to Kim Jong Il, General-Secretary of the Worker's Party of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and President Kim Dae Jung of the Republic of Korea, extending his congratulations on the DPRK-ROK Summit, which was a complete success.
In his letter to Kim Jong IL, Jiang Zemin said that the meeting and its achievements serve as a manifestation of the long-cherished national aspiration of the DPRK people to put an end to separation and achieve national reunification at an early date, it is also the result of the decision made by leaders of the North and the South proceeding from their fundamental national interests and with statesman's vision and wisdom. I heartily rejoice at the complete success of the North-South Summit, and hereby extend my warm congratulations to General-Secretary Kim Jong Il and the party and government of the DPRK. Jiang Zemin reiterated in his letter that the North and the South of Korea are the main parties involved in the affairs of the Korean Peninsula. China will continue its consistent position that the North and the South should achieve independent and peaceful reunification through dialogues and negotiations, and will, as always, continue to work actively for the maintenance of peace and stability on the Peninsula.
Jiang said in his letter to Kim Dae Jung that the Summit of the Peninsula was a major event of historical significance. The meeting produced constructive achievements and thus made valuable contribution to peace and stability on the Peninsula. I heartily rejoice at this and hereby extend my sincere congratulations to Your Excellency. Jiang Zemin stressed that improvement of North-South relations serves the fundamental interests of the two sides and the common aspiration of the Korean nation. He expressed the belief that this Summit meeting will mark a good beginning of better mutual understanding and trust as well as deepened exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in various fields, leading to the eventual realization of independent and peaceful reunification of the Peninsula.
