On November 22, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of China-Latin America Media Leaders Summit at the headquarters of the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago. President Michelle Bachelet of Chile attended as well.
Upon arrival, Xi Jinping was warmly received by Michelle Bachelet, ECLAC Executive Secretary Alicia Barcena and others. Alicia Barcena welcomed Xi Jinping to visit the ECLAC and attend the opening ceremony of China-Latin America Media Leaders Summit.
Amid warm applause, Xi Jinping delivered a speech entitled "Create a New Pattern of China-Latin America Media Cooperation".
Xi Jinping stressed that the first official China-Latin America Media Leaders Summit is an unprecedented deed and a major event in the history of China-Latin America media communication. "If we share the same voice and virtue, we can correspond with and admire each other regardless of distance and encounter." Media communication is an important part of China-Latin America relationship. Media in China and Latin America can accomplish much in inheriting and developing the friendship between the two peoples.
Xi Jinping put forward three propositions on deepening China-Latin America media cooperation. Firstly, we should leverage each other's advantages to jointly enhance the influence of Chinese and Latin American media, show the world a more authentic and vibrant China as well as Latin America, and jointly voice opinions on world peace and development and other major issues. Secondly, we need to stay committed, jointly boost new development in bilateral pragmatic cooperation, inspire the enthusiasm and confidence in cooperation of both sides, and promote innovative cooperation models. Thirdly, we should learn from each other and elevate China-Latin America media exchanges and cooperation to a new level. China has announced to establish a China-Latin America media exchange center and invite some journalists from Latin America to work and study in China. At the same time, China will train 500 media professionals for Latin American and the Caribbean states in the next five years to achieve common prosperity in the field.
Xi Jinping pointed out that the ECLAC plays a significant role in promoting China-Latin America cooperation. It is hoped that the ECLAC will advance the alignment between the development strategies of both sides and make new contributions to the development of China-Latin America relations.
Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others attended the ceremony.
