Xu Yixin

(1911.11.14-1994.12.30) Former name: Xu Yixin. Vice Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, People's Republic of China (1966.1-1979.2)

Born in Quzhou, Zhejiang, Xu Yixin took part in the Northern Expedition, the 3rd Armed Uprising of Shanghai Workers, and the August First Nanchang Uprsing. From 1928 to the beginning of 1931, he studied in Sun Yat-sen University, Lenin Institute and the Headquarters of General Staff in Moscow. After returning China, he successively took the positions of Director of Staff and Deputy Director of the Political Department of the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army and concurrently Chief of the Diplomatic Committee of the Soviet Areas in Hubei, Henan, and Anhui Provinces. From May to July 1931, on behalf of the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army, he negotiated with Sun Weiru, plenipotentiary representative of Yang Hucheng, Commander of the North West Army of Kuomintang, and reached a secret agreement of non-aggression and stretched a secret Red communication line with the Soviet Areas in Sichuan and Shaanxi. He joined in the Long March. In May 1942, he was appointed head of the Secretariat of the Committee of the Rectification Studies of the Central Party. From 1943 to 1945, he was Secretary of the Party Committee of the Offices Directly under the Central Committee of the CPC, and head of the General Political Department of the Administrative Bureau of the Central Committee. From November 1948 to June 1949, he was Chief of the Political Department of Shenyang Military Command. After joining in Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1950, he successively served as Deputy Director General (1950.5-1951.1) and Director General (1951.1 –1954.8) of the Department of Soviet Union and East European Affairs. In 1952, he followed Premier Zhou Enlai as his consultant in the visit to the Soviet Union and participated in the talks between Zhou Enlai and Stalin. Later, he was the first Chinese Ambassador to Albania (1954.9-1957.5), Ambassador to Norway (1958.5-1962.2), Ambassador to Syria (1962.5 – 1965.12), and Ambassador to Pakistan (1979.8 – 1982.4). In April 1982, Pakistan conferred on him the decoration of highest honor, the Medal of Mohammed Ali Jinnah. After 1983, he served as member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the 6th and 7th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
