Born in Chang Shu, Jiangsu Province, Wang Shu was a veteran journalist. Before the founding of the People's Republic, he served as a military correspondent on Xinhua News Agency. After the founding of the People's Republic, he served as editor of the Department of International Affairs of Xinhua News Agency, and correspondent in such branches of the agency as in Pakistan, Guinea, Mali, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Cuba. The end of 1969 saw him as correspondent in the Bonn Branch of Xinhua News Agency. In September 1972, in the capacity of the representative of the Chinese government, he reached the agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. In October of the year, he was designated as Counsellor in the Chinese Embassy in the Federal Republic of Germany. Thereafter, he served as Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany (1974.9-1976.11) and Ambassador to Austria (1980.7-1985.12). He also served as Editor in Chief of "Journal of Red Flag" (1976-1978) and President of China Institute of International Studies (1986.1-1990.6).
