Xi Jinping Meets with President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines

On November 19, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping met in Lima with President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines.

Xi Jinping pointed out that President Rodrigo Duterte's successful state visit to China last month has comprehensively improved China-Philippines relations, opened up a new chapter of bilateral relations and injected positive energy into regional peace and stability. Both sides should ensure that bilateral relations steadily progress along the right track, stick to friendly cooperation, adhere to proper settlement of disputes and insist on common development, so that China-Philippines good-neighborly and friendly cooperation can enjoy stable and long-term development and benefit the two peoples with more cooperation outcomes.

Xi Jinping stressed that facing a whole new situation, China and the Philippines should reinforce exchanges at all levels, exchange views on major issues of common concern promptly, resume mechanisms in various areas as soon as possible and enhance mutual trust and cooperation. Both countries should cement outcomes from practical cooperation and let the two peoples benefit from them. The two sides should actively discuss maritime cooperation, promote positive interaction in the sea and turn the South China Sea issue into a favorable note in advancing bilateral friendship and cooperation. Non-governmental force should be fully mobilized. Through non-governmental exchanges, both countries can step up the integration of interests and reinforce cooperation in culture, education, health, youth and other areas. Next year, the Philippines will take over the rotating presidency of the ASEAN. China is willing to make concerted efforts with the Philippines to constantly push forward China-ASEAN relations and East Asia cooperation. China and the Philippines are both developing countries within the APEC. China is willing to work with all members, including the Philippines, to keep focusing on economic cooperation and push the Lima meeting this time for a success.

Rodrigo Duterte expressed that his visit to China last month was a complete success with fruitful achievements. The Philippines upholds independent foreign policies, and is willing to be a friend of China, who is like a brother to the Philippines, forever. Grateful for China's assistance in its development, the Philippines stands ready to strengthen cooperation with China in infrastructure construction and other areas. The two sides share similar views on many issues and should maintain close communication and coordination in a bid to jointly boost Asia's development and peace, prosperity and justice in the world. The Philippine side is willing to properly deal with relevant maritime issues with China through dialogue and consultation so as to jointly maintain the improvement and development momentum of bilateral relations.
