On November 19, 2016 local time, President Xi Jinping met in Lima with President Barack Obama of the US. Both heads of state reviewed and summarized the experience from the development of China-US relations in the past three-odd years and agreed to ensure the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations along the right track.

Xi Jinping spoke positively of Barack Obama's efforts in developing China-US relations. Xi Jinping pointed out that this is our third meeting this year and the ninth meeting over the last three years. We have exchanged in-depth views on issues concerning the strategic significance and overall situation of the development of China-US relations on many occasions and reached extensive consensus. In particular, the joint decision to establish the new model of China-US major-country relations has guided China-US relations towards important and positive progress. The 3-odd-year-long experience of the development of China-US relations can be summed up as follows: first, both countries should seize the general direction of the development of bilateral relations and cooperation is the only correct choice for both sides; second, both countries should actively expand practical cooperation and pursue win-win and multi-win results, which benefit not only the two countries, but the world; third, both countries should manage sensitive issues in a constructive manner, respect each other, avoid misjudgment, think more in each other's perspective and prevent the escalation of conflicts.

Xi Jinping emphasized that bearing crucial responsibilities in safeguarding world peace and stability as well as boosting global development and prosperity, China and the US share extensive common interests. The development of a long-term, healthy and stable China-US relationship conforms to the fundamental interests of both peoples and is the common expectation of the international community as well. I have already held telephone talks with Mr. Donald Trump after his election as the new President of the US. I am willing to work with Mr. Donald Trump to expand bilateral cooperation in various areas at bilateral, regional and global levels, manage disputes in a constructive manner and realize non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, so as to push China-US relations for greater progress at the new starting point.

Barack Obama noted that over the last three-plus years, he and President Xi Jinping have maintained frequent exchanges, established a candid, friendly and constructive relationship and enhanced mutual trust. The US and China have joined efforts to cope with challenges and effectively managed disputes. Relevant consultation and cooperation mechanisms have also achieved productive results. Both sides have launched cooperation in boosting global growth, reaching the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iranian nuclear issue, addressing the Ebola epidemic in West Africa and other issues. In particular, both countries have played a key role in calling on the global society to tackle climate change. US-China relationship is the most important and significant bilateral relations in the world and a constructive US-China relationship will benefit the two peoples and the international society. He has already introduced the importance of US-China relations to Mr. Donald Trump and emphasized that a smooth transition of bilateral relations should be realized. The US side stands ready to develop a more sustained and productive bilateral relationship with China.

Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on major international and regional issues of common concern.
