Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Latin American Affairs Qiu Xiaoqi Visits Costa Rica

From June 19 to 22, 2022, Special Representative of the Chinese Government on Latin American Affairs Qiu Xiaoqi visited Costa Rica, during which he met with Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves, President of the Legislative Assembly Rodrigo Arias Sánchez, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship Arnoldo Andre Tinoco, respectively, and exchanged in-depth views with them on bilateral relations, practical cooperation and other issues. Chinese Ambassador to Costa Rica Tang Heng attended the meetings.

Qiu Xiaoqi said that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Costa Rica. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, thanks to the joint efforts of both sides, bilateral friendship has been deepened, mutual trust has been enhanced and cooperation has yielded remarkable results, which have benefited both peoples. Costa Rica became the first Central American country to establish a strategic partnership with China. China is willing to take the opportunity of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries to strengthen exchanges between the two governments and the two legislative institutions at all levels, and supported by the Belt and Road cooperation, bring practical cooperation to a higher level, conduct diverse forms of people-to-people and cultural exchanges, promote the people-to-people bond between the two sides and continuously push the China-Costa Rica strategic partnership to new heights. Qiu Xiaoqi also briefed on China's domestic situation, China's foreign policy and the whole-process people's democracy.

President Chaves welcomed Special Representative Qiu Xiaoqi's visit to Costa Rica on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, saying that Costa Rica attaches great importance to developing relations with China, firmly abides by the one-China principle, values China's international standing and influence, and appreciates China's support for its economic and social development and fight against COVID-19. Costa Rica and China have complementary economic structures and broad prospects for cooperation. Costa Rica is ready to give full play to its own advantages, strengthen synergy with China and translate the potential of bilateral cooperation into more cooperation outcomes for the benefit of the two countries and two peoples.

President Arias said, he was honored to participate in and witness the establishment of diplomatic ties between Costa Rica and China. The achievements in the development of bilateral relations fully prove that establishing diplomatic ties with China is a correct decision made by Costa Rica and serves the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples. Costa Rica's Legislative Assembly will strengthen exchanges and cooperation and share governance experience with China's National People's Congress and National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to constantly inject new impetus into the development of bilateral relations.

Foreign Minister Andre said, Costa Rica has prioritized developing its relations with China in its foreign diplomacy and is willing to push forward diversified and in-depth bilateral cooperation. Costa Rica is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China on addressing climate change and other international issues and jointly build a world of peace, stability, development and prosperity.
