Assistant Foreign Minister Nong Rong Visits Laos

From March 11 to 12, 2023, Assistant Foreign Minister Nong Rong visited Laos. During his visit, Nong Rong met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos Saleumxay Kommasith, held diplomatic consultations with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune, and the two sides exchanged views on China-Laos relations and international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern. Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong attended relevant activities.

Nong Rong said that General Secretary and President Xi Jinping reached strategic common understandings with General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party Central Committee and Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith on jointly building a high-standard, high-quality and high-level China-Laos community with a shared future when he was in China for a visit last November. China regards Laos as a priority partner for cooperation on its path toward modernization, and is happy to have Laos onboard the "express train" of China's development to share China’s market opportunities. China is ready to work with Laos to fully implement the important common understandings reached between the top leaders of the two parties and two countries, advance bilateral exchanges and cooperation in various fields in a coordinated manner, ensure the safe and smooth operation of the China-Laos Railway, accelerate the implementation of the China-Thailand-Laos Connectivity Development Corridor Outlook, strengthen coordination and cooperation on multilateral affairs such as the China-ASEAN cooperation and the Lancang-Mekong cooperation, and further deepen the building of a China-Laos community with a shared future. China has included Laos as one of the first pilot destinations for its resumed outbound group tours, and is ready to enhance tourism cooperation and cross-border visits between the two countries to enrich the cultural and people-to-people connectivity of the China-Laos community with a shared future.

The Lao side warmly congratulated China on the election of a new national leadership at the first session of the 14th National People's Congress of China, noting that the unanimous reelection of General Secretary Xi Jinping as president of the People's Republic of China is the common aspiration and expectation of the Chinese people. The Lao leaders would like to extend their warmest and most sincere congratulations. The party and government of Laos sincerely thanked the party and government of China for their long-term valuable support and selfless assistance for Laos’ socialist development, and are ready to work with China to further implement the outcomes of General Secretary and President Thongloun Sisoulith's visit to China by deepening political mutual trust, expanding practical cooperation, strengthening people-to-people exchanges, and enhancing multilateral coordination with China, to take the Laos-China comprehensive strategic cooperation to new heights. Laos is ready to join hands with China to advance the implementation of the China-Thailand-Laos Connectivity Development Corridor Outlook focusing on railway cooperation, and take the launch of passenger transport function of the border railway ports between Laos and China in mid-April as an opportunity to welcome more Chinese tourists to Laos for sightseeing.

During his visit to Laos, Assistant Foreign Minister Nong Rong also visited the China-Laos Railway and Mohan-Boten Economic Cooperation Zone at the border area between China and Laos.
