From July 10 to 13, 2023, Special Envoy for Pacific Island Countries Affairs of the Chinese Government Qian Bo visited Kiribati, during which he met respectively with President and Foreign Minister of Kiribati Taneti Maamau and Speaker of the House of Assembly Tangariki Reete, among others. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations, practical cooperation and international and regional issues of mutual interest and concern. Qian Bo also attended the Independence Day celebration of Kiribati.
