On June 9, 2025, Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met in Beijing with newly appointed Executive Director of the Secretariat of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Eduardo Pedrosa.
Ma Zhaoxu congratulated Eduardo Pedrosa on assuming office and stated that in the face of escalating unilateralism and protectionism, APEC, as the most influential economic cooperation mechanism in the Asia-Pacific, should stay committed to multilateralism and an open economy, actively advance the building of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, expand cooperation in emerging sectors such as the digital economy and artificial intelligence, and inject more momentum into Asia-Pacific and world economic growth. China attaches great importance to APEC's role, supports the work of the APEC Secretariat, and is ready to use the opportunity of hosting APEC in 2026 to work with all parties to elevate Asia-Pacific cooperation to a new height and build together an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future.
Eduardo Pedrosa said that the Secretariat appreciates China's long-standing contributions to advancing APEC cooperation and is willing to fully support China in successfully hosting the 2026 APEC meeting, produce more outcomes from regional cooperation, and jointly promote development and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific.
