On 28 November 2024, Ambassador Hou Yanqi was invited to attend the ASEAN-China Forum 2024 in Hong Kong and delivered a keynote speech.

Ambassador Hou briefed on the new developments of the ASEAN-China comprehensive strategic partnership, emphasizing that ASEAN-China relations are most leading, most dynamic, and most fruitful among the relationship between ASEAN and its partners. The achievements are attributable to the fact that we adhere to mutual respect, openness, inclusiveness and development as a priority. In the face of challenges such as the resurgence of geopolitical rivalry, Cold War mentality and unilateralism, China and ASEAN should firmly uphold the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, practice Asian values, and work together to maintain long-term peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China adopted a comprehensive and strategic plan for further deepening reform across the board to advance Chinese modernization. The dividends from China’s development will bring significant opportunities to the region. Hong Kong, leveraging its role within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, can play a greater role in enhancing ASEAN-China cooperation.

The ASEAN-China Forum was organized by the Centre on Contemporary China and the World at the University of Hong Kong, and attended by representatives from various communities in China and ASEAN countries.
