On 6 January 2026, Her Excellency Yan Jiarong, Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas, together with the Hon. Michael Darville, Minister of Health and Wellness of The Bahamas, jointly announced the implementation of the Brightness Action Initiative - China-aided Cataract Surgery in The Bahamas. Also present were members of the Chinese medical team and Bahamian public health officials.

Ambassador Yan stated that the Brightness Action Initiative is a significant well-being project that demonstrates China-Bahamas friendship and a concrete step in implementing China’s third policy paper on Latin America and the Caribbean. She added that despite the world being in turmoil, the Brightness Action marks a new chapter in China–Bahamas relations in 2026, signifying the continuation of important progress of the bilateral relations based on mutual respect and benefit.
Minister Darville expressed his appreciation to the Chinese government for dispatching a high-level medical team, noting that Brightness Action is a “life-changing gift” from China to Bahamian patients. He said The Bahamas is willing to deepen cooperation with China in the field of health and medical services.
Seven ophthalmology experts from Hunan Province are expected to perform surgeries on around 200 Bahamian cataract patients. The project has received extensive coverage from Bahamian media.
