Xu Dunxin

(1934.12.10-) Vice Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, People's Republic of China (1991.4-1993.4)

Born in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, Xu Dunxin pursued study in the English Department of Fudan University and then in the English Department of Peking University from 1956 to 1962. He conducted probation in Overseas Service Department of Broadcasting Administration of the People's Republic of China. After joining Ministry of Foreign Affairs in July 1964, he served as a member of Translation Team, Deputy Director of the Department of Asian Affairs, First Secretary in the Chinese Embassy in Japan, Director and Deputy Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs, Ministerial Counsellor in the Chinese Embassy in Japan (1985.8-1988.2), Director General of the Department of Asian Affairs (1988.3-1989.10), Assistant Foreign Minister (1989.10-1991.4). In April 1993, he was designated Ambassador to Japan. After he took the position of Assistant Foreign Minister, he paid a visit to Indonesia in December 1989 to talk on the normalization of the relationship between the two countries. In July 1990, on behalf of the Chinese government, he had talks on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Singapore both in Beijing and Singapore. From 1990 to 1991, he attended several meetings on Cambodia of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. In August 1991, he had consultations with the vice-foreign minister of Viet Nam in Beijing on the normalization of the diplomatic relationship between China and Viet Nam, and the political solution of the Cambodian issues. In September 1992, he went to Hanoi to have the first consultations at the vice-foreign minister level after the normalization of the relationship between China and Viet Nam. In April 1991, he led the Chinese diplomatic delegation to pay the first visit to Brunei and conducted talks on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. In February 1992, he went to India for the consultation on the boundary between China and India. From May to August of the year, in the capacity of the Chief Representative of China, he negotiated with the representatives of South Korea on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Korea.
