In 2021, the comprehensive strategic partnership between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Peru continued to deepen.
Political mutual trust between the two countries further firmed up. In July, President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to President-elect Pedro Castillo Terrones, and the Chinese ambassador to Peru attended the Peruvian presidency handover ceremony as President Xi’s special representative. In November, President Xi Jinping and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi exchanged congratulatory messages with President Pedro Castillo Terrones and Foreign Minister Óscar Maúrtua de Romaña respectively on the 50th anniversary of China-Peru diplomatic relations. NPC Chairman Li Zhanshu held a virtual meeting with Peruvian Congress President Maria del Carmen Alva. In December, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi took a phone call from Foreign Minister Maúrtua. A number of political party leaders in Peru sent congratulatory letters for the 100th anniversary of the CPC and attended the CPC in Dialogue with World Political Parties High-level Meeting. Cooperation against COVID yielded fruitful outcomes. Peru expressed appreciation for the vaccines and anti-COVID supplies provided by China. The two countries maintained sound communication and coordination on major international and regional issues.
Practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges moved forward steadily. China remained Peru's largest trading partner and a major source of investment. Cooperation in infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture and other areas progressed smoothly. President Castillo attended the China Import and Export Fair and delivered a pre-recorded address.
