The 22nd Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea Held in Xi'an

On September 13, 2024, China and ASEAN countries held the 22nd Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) in Xi'an. The meeting was co-chaired by Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Hong Liang and Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Dato' Sri Amran Mohamed Zin, and attended by senior officials and representatives from ASEAN countries.

China and ASEAN countries unanimously believed that maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea is of great significance. They call for strengthening dialogue, exercising restraint, properly handling differences, enhancing mutual trust, and maintaining stability in the maritime situation. All parties agreed to continue to comprehensively and effectively implement the DOC, and deepen cooperation in marine environmental protection, scientific research, search and rescue, law enforcement, and other areas. All parties fully acknowledged the positive progress and good momentum achieved since the initiation of the third reading of the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC), and agreed to accelerate negotiations in a flexible and innovative manner to reach the COC at an early date, in order to turn the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship and cooperation.

From September 10 to 12, China and ASEAN countries also held the 44th Joint Working Group Meeting on the Implementation of the DOC.
