On April 10, 2018, President Xi Jinping met with Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde at Boao State Guesthouse in Hainan Province.
Xi Jinping spoke positively of the important contributions of the IMF to promoting global economic recovery and growth and maintaining financial stability, and affirmed the quota and governance reforms organized and implemented by the IMF as well as its enhancement of representativeness and voice of developing countries and emerging market economies. Xi Jinping expressed his appreciation to the IMF’s caring for the development of China and Asia as well as its support for the Belt and Road Initiative.
Xi Jinping introduced the situation of China’s economic operation and structural reform, and pointed out that China is a responsible major country as well as a builder and contributor of the current international system. China will continue to dedicate itself to maintaining international order and international rules, and continue to support free trade as well as trade and investment liberalization and facilitation. The international community should abandon the Cold-War mentality and advocate jointly building a community with a shared future for mankind. China stands ready to continuously strengthen cooperation with the IMF.
Christine Lagarde extended her congratulations to President Xi Jinping on his election as Chinese President. She highly appreciated the keynote speech delivered by President Xi Jinping this morning, especially the positive message that China will firmly push forward reform and opening up. President Xi Jinping’s speech adds certainties and hope to today’s world. The world needs leading force like China. The responsibility of the IMF is to maintain free trade and the multilateral system. Conservatism and unilateralism are not conducive to world economic and financial stability. The IMF supports dialogue and cooperation, remains committed to intensifying cooperation with China and actively supports and participates in the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.
