On the evening of June 7, 2004, Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing talked over phone with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and exchanged views with him on the new draft resolution of the UN Security Council on the Iraqi issue.

Li said that the Chinese side upholds that the Iraqi issue should be addressed within the framework of the United Nations and supports the UN to play a significant role in the process. On the issue of the new resolution, relevant parties should respect the will of the Iraqi people, and listen to recommendations from other parties in a bid to reach the broadest consensus.

Annan appreciated China's stance on the Iraqi issue and hoped that China would continue to play its constructive role in the UN Security Council.
